Bond Referendum

On November 3, Wapello County voters will consider a $45 million Jail Expansion & Renovations Bond Referendum.

The proposed project would increase the jail’s total capacity to 316 beds. It would also include renovations to the kitchen, laundry, booking, and other support areas. Site modifications, a new roof, and a new security system are also included.

 

Why Is the Project Being Considered?

Wapello County has identified inmate classification requirements, jail capacity, and the cost of housing inmates in other counties as key issues.

The current jail does not have enough appropriately configured space to meet Department of Corrections inmate classification requirements. This reduces the number of available beds and can require the county to transport and house inmates in other counties at a daily cost to Wapello County.

The existing jail is generally in good condition and continues to support current operations. However, several areas (as referenced above) have been identified with issues relating to space limitations, aging building components, equipment needs, and operational constraints.
